As summer draws to a close, the excitement of the back-to-school season begins to fill the air. Although my toddler may not be preparing for formal education, he deserves his own special preparation for the wonderful world of learning at daycare. These years are crucial for development, and providing them with the right tools can make our educational journey together both enjoyable and enriching. In this blog post, we’ll explore a list of must-haves for toddlers that will help them transition into daycare and school with ease.
Fun and Interactive Educational Toys
Learning through play is an essential aspect of a toddler’s cognitive, emotional, and social development. Look for toys that encourage exploration, creativity, and problem-solving skills. Blocks, puzzles, stacking toys, and shape sorters are excellent choices for fostering motor skills and spatial awareness. Additionally, toys with alphabet and number features can introduce toddlers to the basics of language and math in a playful manner.
Here are some of our current favorites:
Backpack or Mini Bag
A small, lightweight backpack or mini bag can make your toddler feel like a big kid and help them develop a sense of responsibility. Choose a design with their favorite colors or characters to make it even more appealing. Ensure it is just the right size for their tiny frame, with comfortable straps, so they can carry their essentials to preschool or daycare. This backpack was gifted to us from our neighbor, and we absolutely love it. It keeps my boy busy with developing fine motor skills to zip, snap, button, and play.
Healthy Snacks and Water Bottle
Toddlers are busy little learners, and all that exploring can work up quite an appetite. Keep them energized and hydrated throughout the day with healthy snacks like cut fruits, crackers, or veggie sticks, along with a spill-proof water bottle. Although our daycare provides snacks and food, I’ve provided a few of our favorites that are available at home and on the go.
We actually purchased this Thermos for Z when he was 9 months old. He is 2 now, and this has held up so well. I love that it’s insulated and that it keeps his water cold. It’s very easy for Z to open and close.
Labels and Personalized Items
Toddlers can be forgetful, and it’s easy for their belongings to get mixed up with others at school. Invest in personalized labels for their backpack, lunchbox, water bottle, and other essentials. This will not only help them recognize their belongings but also instill a sense of ownership and pride in their items. My aunt found this label maker and introduced it to my mom who then introduced it to me. I absolutely love it and found that I label everything.
Comfortable Clothing and Shoes
Active toddlers need comfortable clothing that allows them to move freely and explore without restrictions. Choose soft, breathable fabrics that are easy to wash and maintain. Don’t forget to pick a sturdy pair of shoes that fit well and provide proper support for their growing feet. Velcro closures can make it easier for toddlers to put on and take off their shoes independently.
Picture Books and Reading Material
Introduce the joy of reading early on by surrounding your toddler with colorful picture books and age-appropriate reading material. Reading together can be a bonding experience and will also nurture their language skills and imagination. Look for books that feature repetitive phrases or rhymes to engage their attention.

Equipping them with the right tools can set the foundation for a love of learning that will last a lifetime. From educational toys that encourage exploration to practical essentials like a backpack and healthy snacks, these must-haves will ensure that your toddler is ready to embrace their educational adventures with enthusiasm and confidence. Remember, the most important thing is to create a positive and supportive learning environment that fosters their natural curiosity and love for discovering the world around them.
