Protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful rays is essential for maintaining healthy and youthful-looking skin. Sunscreen is one of the most important tools in your skincare arsenal, but with so many options on the market, it can be difficult to know which one is right for your skin type. In this blog post, we will provide guidance on picking the right SPF for each skin type.

  1. Oily Skin

If you have oily skin, it’s important to choose a sunscreen that is lightweight and non-greasy. Look for sunscreens that are labeled as “oil-free” or “non-comedogenic” to avoid clogging pores and causing breakouts. A mattifying sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher will provide adequate protection without adding extra shine to your skin. Here are my top choices:

EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46 – Lightweight, oil-free, great for acne-prone and oily skin.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Clear Skin SPF 60 – Absorbs oil, leaves a matte finish.

Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel Lotion SPF 30 – Hydrating yet non-greasy, absorbs quickly.

  1. Dry Skin

If you have dry skin, it’s important to choose a sunscreen that is hydrating and moisturizing. Look for sunscreens that contain ingredients like hyaluronic acid or glycerin, which will help to lock in moisture and prevent your skin from feeling tight or flaky. A cream or lotion sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher will provide the best protection for dry skin. If you’re having a hard time with dry skin, I have a blog post that goes over the different types of products for dry skin. But, here are some sunscreens my friends and I love to use:

CeraVe Hydrating Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30 – With ceramides and hyaluronic acid

Aveeno Protect + Hydrate Sunscreen SPF 60 – Includes oat and glycerin for added moisture.

  1. Sensitive Skin

If you have sensitive skin, it’s important to choose a sunscreen that is gentle and fragrance-free. Look for sunscreens that are labeled as “hypoallergenic” or “fragrance-free” to avoid irritation or allergic reactions. Physical sunscreens, which contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, are also a good choice for sensitive skin as they are less likely to cause irritation. You can read more about the best sunscreens for eczema-prone skin in my other post, here. Here are a few SPF that I love specifically for this skin type:

Biore UV Aqua Rich Water Essence — a hydrating, waterproof product that is light on the skin

Centella Water Fit Sun Serum — absorbs well into the skin without the irritation

  1. Combination Skin

If you have combination skin, it’s important to choose a sunscreen that is lightweight and non-greasy, but also hydrating enough to prevent dryness in certain areas. Look for sunscreens that are labeled as “oil-free” or “non-comedogenic,” but also contain hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid or glycerin. A lotion or gel sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher will provide the best protection for combination skin. Here’s what I’m liking:

Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40 – Lightweight gel texture, works well under makeup.

Eucerin Oil Control Sunscreen SPF 50 – Matte finish with moisturizing balance.

La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Moisturizer with SPF 30 – Moisturizer + sunscreen hybrid.

  1. Acne-Prone Skin

If you have acne-prone skin, it’s important to choose a sunscreen that is oil-free and non-comedogenic to avoid clogging pores and causing breakouts. Look for sunscreens that are labeled as “acne-prone” or “non-comedogenic” and avoid sunscreens that contain fragrances or heavy oils. A lightweight sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher will provide adequate protection without adding extra oil to your skin. Try these out:

EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46 — Using niacinamide calms the skin

Neutrogena Clear Face Liquid Lotion Sunscreen SPF 55 – Won’t cause breakouts, oil-free.

CeraVe AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion with SPF 30 – Lightweight and includes niacinamide and ceramides.

Takeaways

In conclusion, picking the right SPF for your skin type is essential for protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful rays. By choosing a sunscreen that is tailored to your skin type and needs, you can help prevent sun damage and maintain healthy, youthful-looking skin. Remember to apply sunscreen every day, even on cloudy days, and reapply every two hours for maximum protection.
